Online transactions are necessary in many situations outside the "online store" scenario. For instance, registration for events others often require payments to hold a reservation or for payment in full. There are many "pre-packaged" open-source shopping carts available, but often, a full-blown shopping cart is not the best choice for non-store situations. Shopping carts are designed for online stores, and there are several good shopping carts that, with some customization, work well for that purpose. However, shopping carts not only don’t work very well as part of a registration system (for instance), but they also carry a great deal of unnecessary overhead. For such situations, Evo recommends either a Paypal implementation (simple and inexpensive) or development of a custom transaction system incorporating an Authorize.net payment gateway and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for secure online processing of credit card transactions. In either case, customers can use credit cards for online transactions, just as with a shopping cart.
