Frequently Asked Questions

Q What's 'information architecture' and what does it mean to my website?

A Imagine a building carpenters make up as they go along; putting up walls with the intention of figuring out what goes where and how it will fit together later. You don't have to consider the scenario for very long before it gets pretty scary.

Websites, in some ways, are like buildings; we even think of them in terms of 'webspace'. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for websites to be built without stopping to consider how to optimize the use of the webspace to accomplish the business goals. Information architecture—the process of organizing, prioritizing, and determining the relationships and presentation of information—creates a foundation for the website on which both form and function rest.

On the other hand, websites are not like buildings, in that, when business needs and processes change, they are relatively quick and inexpensive to reorganize and refresh. Information architecture helps evaluate existing sites and recast them into a more workable framework that meets current needs.
